Docker and containers are great, but sometimes feel overkill for a quick test, especially when file sharing gets complicated. Online virtual machines are an option, but waiting for them to spin up and dealing with file transfers can be a pain too.

So, what’s a quick and relatively easy way to test potentially risky software in an isolated environment? The answer - a lightweight virtual machine!

In this quick guide, we’ll walk through setting up a minimal Windows 8.1 virtual machine using VirtualBox. This approach is perfect for:
